Here comes a bummer for OnePlus 3 and 3T users. The yesteryear flagships will not be updated beyond Android O which is due for release later this month. It has been confirmed by no one else but company’s product head.
In a quick interview, which was posted on OnePlus forums, OnePlus product head mentioned that the Android O will indeed be the last major upgrade for both the phones. The OnePlus 3 and 3T both were released with Android Marshmallow 6.0 and are currently on Android Nougat 7.1.1. The update to Android O means they will get a second major update but won’t go beyond that. Both the phones have quite capable hardware with Snapdragon 820/821 and 6GB of RAM to keep going further. However, the company has decided to shift its focus and efforts to OnePlus 5, its current flagship. OnePlus had previously promised Android Nougat update for OnePlus 2 but later backtracked.
OnePlus plans to update both the phones to OxygentOS 4.5 in 1-2 months. Also, post Android O update for OnePlus 3/3T, the Open Beta program will close the users of these phoens. The original OnePlus 3 is little more than a year old while the OnePlus 3T was launched only in November of last year. Google’s guidelines mention 18 months of update window in which both the phones perfectly fit.
If you’re currently using either of OnePlus 3 or 3T, does this move make you lose trust in the maker? Do you think both the phones should be upgraded further?
