Blackberry Passport Debuts In India, To Cost $800

Blackberry’s much talked square shaped smartphone BlackBerry Passport was announced for the Indian market yesterday. It was internationally launched just five days back. For its launch, BlackBerry has tied up with Amazon India, which will be exclusively selling the handset online. It’ll also be available through BlackBerry Exclusive stores too. BlackBerry Passport is priced at ~$812 (INR 49,990).

The smartphone is no doubt targeted at enterprise users which have always been BlackBerry’s audience. The square shaped handset is definitely not for single handed use. It is built keeping in mind the requirements of an enterprise users. It should make document viewing, creation and typing in emails comfortable, thanks to its big screen and bigger QWERTY keyboard. Its display which is its USP as well, is a 4.5 inch unit with 1440×1440 resolution which gives ~453 dpi. With BlackBerry Passport, company has also recognized the need of its power-enterprise users and has worked towards to make the handset fulfil them by giving the latest hardware. New smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core processor and 3GB RAM. It’s same as recently launched Sony Xperia Z3. BlackBerry sure knows that its audience is no more boring and likes to mix work with play. So it gives them 13MP AF camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). To keep all the fun alive, BlackBerry Passport has a huge 3450 mAh battery too.

On the software side, it runs on BlackBerry OS 10.3 which incorporates BlackBerry Blend, a solution to connect your Passport to your PCs and tablets. There is voice assistant present too called BlackBerry Assistant. It also offers two app stores, namely BlackBerry Appworld and Amazon Appstore. And it supports Android apps too.
Although, the handset is priced high, BlackBerry is throwing some freebies to make the deal look reasonable. It’s giving gift vouchers worth Rs.5000 (~$81) and for Jet Airway’s frequent fliers, 5000 complimentary miles will be added to their JP accounts, if they pre-book it now. Obviously, frequent fliers will be enterprise users. BlackBerry Passport is now up for pre-orders and will be available from 10th October.
