Microsoft has just announced the availability of the Windows Phone SDK to version 7.8. This new update will enable developers to test their existing apps for Windows Phone 7.5 on Windows Phone 7.8 emulator that will be introduced with the update. The update contains two new emulator images, for devices with 512 MB RAM and 256 MB RAM respectively. The OS doesn’t seem to bring anything new to developers apart from the resizable live tiles. Microsoft states that the Windows Phone 7.8 doesn’t bring new APIs for developers. The highlights of the update are,

  • Your app’s primary tile can have a customized small tile, support wide tiles, and also take advantage of the Flip tile template.
  • Secondary tiles can be enabled to take advantage of all three of the new tile templates (Flip, Iconic, and Cycle).

Looking at the time Microsoft released the SDK update, we can say that the OS update itself is just around the corner. Maybe we could see it in next few weeks also.
