In the recent development in patent wars, Nokia has been granted the preliminary injunction against the ST Microelectronics in the Netherlands for supplying Nokia exclusive dual membrane microphones to HTC. This part is used by HTC for its flagship, HTC One. These are the same parts that Nokia uses in Lumia 720. Apparently these were developed exclusively by and for Nokia and were not licensed to HTC or anyone else for use. Since the same company makes these parts for both the companies, it is clear that ST Microelectronics has violated the agreements. Although, the allegations are not directly against the HTC, this will once again delay the HTC One which has already missed its deadline. Finding another supplier and setting up everything is going to cost the HTC precious time. If Nokia manages to block HTC in rest of the Europe as well, then company should find itself in the big trouble. HTC’s comment on the matter can be read below,
HTC is disappointed in the decision. We are considering whether it will have any impact on our business and we will explore alternative solutions immediately.
Apparently this injunction favors Nokia but it puts HTC to a bigger threat than just infringement. Its main competitior, Samsung and its flagship Galaxy S4 has just got that extra field. In any case HTC will have to rush up and bring the One back in time.
