When it comes to giving back to the Android community, Sony is undoubtedly the top OEM to do so. I say so because the company has been active and outspoken about its AOSP development intent. As far as I know, Sony is the only company to provide AOSP ports for its flagships and its efforts date back to the Xperia S era.
Sony is continuing the tradition with its new Xperia Z series of flagships. Except for the original Xperia Z, the recent ones including Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3 are lucky to get the official AOSP ports of Android Lollipop 5.0. These three handsets are part of Sony’s pilot program called 3Beta, a collaboration with 3. Right now it is available in Sweden only. You’d need to apply and qualify for the pilot program (link below). There are limited seats available. So if you happen to be from Sweden, now is the good chance to take part in Sony’s pilot program and help it improve the Lollipop update. Users will apparently get prototypes of Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3 with Android Lollipop 5.0 for testing. Just keep in mind that this is not a final version and there could some flaws in it.
