Ubuntu Smartphones Are A Reality, Really

This news is kind of surprising. Maybe not. But hey, we finally have a smartphone running on Ubuntu OS. Yes, it’s the same famous Linux distro. Not this is the first effort from Canonical to run its OS on phones. If you remember, Ubuntu Touch was its first attempt to get the OS on phones but it failed rather awfully. Although the new version picks up from where the previous one ended, this one looks far more focused and a polished thing.

Now, we have real hardware too that fully supports Ubuntu. It’s the Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition phone. It’s actually an Android phone, which now gets Ubuntu edition too. Interesting thing about new version of Ubuntu is quite lightweight in terms of requirements as it is evident by the specifications of this phone. Aquaris E4.5 has MediaTek branded 1.3GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM. It features a 4.5 inch display with qHD resolution (540×960). It also is a dual SIM phone and it’s fully unlocked to work with all carriers. There’s a 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera and features all usual connectivity options. And it comes in 8GB variant and has microSD support.

Aquaris E4.5 will be available off contract for €170 and will be sold through flash sale.
