Windows 10 Mobile Update Rollout Begins, But Many Devices Would Be Abandoned

Earlier today various reports came out pointing to Windows 10 Mobile update roll out scheduled for today. Thanks to Microsoft’s past record, none of us were actually expecting it to happen. After the missing the publicly announced deadline, Microsoft never again said a word about ETA. But the unimaginable has happened. Microsoft has indeed started rolling out the update. However, without drum rolls.

The update is going out to just handful of phones in the first phase. That sounds like a good idea to avoid the mad rush (load) on the servers. To get the update, you will need to download and install Microsoft Updgrade Advisor app, which will then check if the update is available for your phone in your region. At this point the update is officially available for Lumia 1520, Lumia 830, Lumia 735, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 640, Lumia 635 (1 GB RAM), Lumia 535. An official list includes: Lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, MCJ Madosma Q501 (Source).

Keep in mind that not all phones will get all features of Windows 10 Mobile. So your friend’s Lumia 1520 may have some more features than your Lumia 640. If you noticed, many phones like Lumia 920, Lumia 820 or HTC 8X are missing. Microsoft had said that it will deliver Windows 10 update to the majority of devices, but it has now clarified that this won’t be the wise thing to do considering the insufficient hardware to provide satisfactory experience. So expect many devices, especially those with 512MB RAM, to be stuck on Windows Phone 8.1. This for the second time Microsoft will be abandoning its users and breaking the trust. It similarly abandoned Windows Phone 7 phones when Windows Phone 8.1 was launched.  This may or may not change in coming months. But the users of these devices still have the chance to try out Windows 10 Mobile through the Insider program.

Have you already got the update on your Lumia? What do you think about the new OS? Tell us in the comments.
